Language for Professionals

"Language for Professionals” Self-Learning Module Project

Purpose: GWU Language Center offers online self-learning tutorial modules for, “Language for Professionals”. The teaching modules are built around video clips from interviews with native-speaking professionals in the various fields. The interviews are conducted in Korean and various language learning exercises are available.

Mission:  This project is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Title VI Program. One of the Title VI program’s missions is to support foreign language education in U.S. colleges and universities in order to ensure a steady supply of graduates with expertise in less commonly taught languages (LCTLs). The tutorial modules are owned and managed by GWU's Language Center.

Target for this program: The Korean tutorial modules will be good self-study tools for learners of Korean who are at Intermediate-High to Advanced level.

Goals:  The Self-Learning Module Project aims to support students to develop their advanced level language skills. The students will have an opportunity to hear native speakers discussing various topics, to learn appropriate language usages in a formal setting, and to study more advanced vocabularies and expressions. The topics that are discussed in the clips will enable students to advance their general language skills, more specifically to improve their listening skills and increase their understanding of different cultures and perspectives. This project aims to provide learners a chance to broaden their horizons in their journey of learning Korean.

Faculty info:  Self-Learning Modules for Korean are developed by Dr. Yunkyoung Kang, Professorial Lecturer at the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. She has been teaching Korean at GWU since 2005.
